Outdoor Rock Climbing Anchors Class: Master the System
Ready to transition to independent outdoor climbing? Our comprehensive rock climbing anchors class combines three essential courses into one master clinic. If you want to start climbing outdoors safely on your own, learning how to build solid, redundant climbing anchor systems is your critical next step.
This hands-on outdoor course bridges traditional rigging techniques with modern safety tools. You will learn essential climbing knots, master risk management, and gain the confidence to evaluate and build secure anchors across all three major categories: natural, fixed, and artificial protection (pro).
Course Curriculum & Skills Covered
1. Building Natural Climbing Anchors
Natural anchors utilize massive boulders, sturdy trees, and robust rock features often found at local crags. In this module, you will learn how to:
-
Identify and inspect structural integrity of trees and boulders.
-
Wrap and rig natural features efficiently using webbing and static ropes.
-
Ensure every component of your natural system is reliable and safe.
2. Rigging Fixed Anchors & Sport Climbing Bolts
Fixed anchors are the standard for sport climbing, but they are also frequently found on traditional routes and rappel stations. You will learn how to:
-
Inspect outdoor hardware and differentiate between good and compromised bolts or hangers.
-
Properly attach your carabiners, quickdraws, and slings to fixed protection.
-
Select the correct climbing equipment needed to equalize multi-bolt setups.
3. Placing Trad Gear & Pro Anchors
Placing removable protection is an essential skill for traditional climbing and setting up top-rope anchors where no bolts exist. Our instructors will guide you through:
-
Assessing rock quality and identifying solid cracks and placements.
-
Perfecting trad gear placement using spring-loaded camming devices (cams), passive nuts, and stoppers.
-
How to properly seat, test, and remove gear effectively without leaving it behind.
