You are now part of the outdoor revolution of people who are breaking the norm and boredom of staying indoors, and hitting the road in search of new adventures.

Small compact economical or fuel efficient electric cars are a thing of the past – because they don’t have enough room to hold all your new activity toys.

But who cares! Now a days, an SUV gives you pretty good gas mileage anyways. Nothing against mini cars, just not my cup of tea.

I am in the lookout for some new outdoor sports utility all-wheel drive vehicles that can take me through the off roads of Sedona, dirt roads of Big Bear, car camping at Joshua Tree, and comfortable enough to take my family to the LAX airport.

Shopping around I found a couple of really cool options. From upscale to economical and here are the few that stood out to me the most:

2017 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback now comes with an impressive and super efficient up to 32/25 MPG (hwy/city), symmetrical all-wheel drive, 8.7in ground clearance, flexible cargo-carrying options, their own model boxer engine, eyesight technology that monitors traffic movement and helps you stay safe, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert system, premium audio with 12 speakers and 576-watt-equivalent amplifier (so you can rock your world loud!), high resolution touch screen, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and you can build a custom vehicle that fits your needs. Subaru has been in the industry for a very long time and it’s past reports show it to be a very long lasting, safe and reliable option. It’s also one of the most affordable SUVs in the market. I love their heart warming commercials, because they market to families and outdoor adventure seekers – so you will always find beautiful smiles, candid moments and amazing scenery on their TV commercials.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Land Rover built the mother of all SUVs with this one. With five models, including a convertible! Now, you have to agree that the concept of a convertible SUV is simply genius! I just wouldn’t want to go off-roading in a convertible….. duuuhhh! It’s technology extends from its engine to the driver, with driver aids full parking assistance and surround camera system for a near 360 degree view. If you hit something while parking with one of these puppies, you probably shouldn’t be driving anymore – haha.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep has always distinguished itself for be a rugged animal of a vehicle for rugged people. They had made their latest models less boxy and more sophisticated, but still keep the outstanding capability. With four-wheel drive, you get exceptional control off-road and in the snow. Is advertised as a luxurious but still adventurous vehicle. It comes with built-in features that help when your vehicle loses traction and alerts of potential hazards.

2017 BMW X5

The BMW X5 is advertised as a Sports Activity Vehicle. Just like all the other models, it has great horsepower, three row seating and drive assist technology. Besides their large cargo space, it comes with optional Wi-Fi Hotspots to keep you connected on the go (BUT WHY!), and parking assistance makes fitting into any spot a breeze. Obviously, these model fits well with those who work hard to play hard, since its pricing is a bit higher that it’s competitors. It’s hard not to stare at this model’s interior and exterior design. If you drive to cold places, your passengers can enjoy the heated second row seats and you as the driver can warm up your hands on the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel.

2017 Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is now marketing to adventurous individuals. Is not longer about the comfort, but about how comfortable can you be while traveling to new places and experiences. This sport model comes with a 3.5L EcoBoost power-train, intelligent 4WD, premium 500-watt Sony sound system with clear phase and live acoustics, led lighting (so you don’t kill your battery looking for chump change while parked), three-row sitting for up to seven passengers and reverse sensing system. I think this technology is just about standard with most vehicles nowadays.

2017 Ford Escape

For those who love road trips, the Ford Escape give you great city/highway mileage (21/29) which is pretty good for an SUV. These new line of smart SUVs comes with unintentional lane drift alert technology, warnings when there is a vehicle in your blind spot, tight parking spot auto-maneuvering, foot-operated lift-gate to open your trunk with just a light kick, auto start-stop technology to help you save fuel when driving in the city and you can even start your vehicle remotely.

Sportsmobile 4×4

The Sportsmobile… hmmm. I can not even describe this beast of an option. I guess that is a good description for them – BEAST! I found my dream outdoor vehicle. I am a rugged “do it all” kind of person, so when it comes to traveling on vehicles – whether it is for a road trip, camping or just making sure I have all my gear AND enough room to take a nap after a three days mountain climbing – I like my vehicles to be BIG! WHY? Well here is why:

Oh you didn’t get enough? Here is another one:

Enough said.

Yea and if you get a diesel engine you really hit the ball out of the park!

As you can see, there are options for every person and every budget. Regardless of your activity choices, there is a sports utility vehicle out there for you. Take your time doing the research you need, because making a purchase is a big commitment – it will be with you for years and want to make sure you really like it.

I hope these few options help you in finding your perfect outdoor adventure vehicle, so you can start planning your next outdoor travel adventure soon.

If you ever visit California, there is no better way to satisfy your crave for extreme activities and enjoyment than to go on an outdoor rock climbing adventure. Step out of the routine and find a rock climbing tour nearby, you will be in for a real treat. Lets break down a few top climbing spots.

List of Southern California’s Best Rock Climbing Destinations

Joshua Tree National Park

A MUST visit location – Definitely worth the drive, whether you are with family or friends. Only a few hours away from Los Angeles and about forty minutes from Palm Springs. With it’s a large number of climbing areas and innumerable rock formations, there is always something to do for everybody. Kids and teens often scramble up the tall rock formations in search of an adventure.

Joshua Tree National Park is a widely acclaimed climbing destination. From tenderfoots to more propelled expertise levels. Adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the amazing rock climbing experience offering crack and slab climbing. It is considered the mecca of Southern California for being a world-class climbing destination, often referred to as “climbers playground”.

The outdoor desert landscape is incredible, as well! Because of its prominence, there is entirely restricted outdoor space. However, be aware that you will never find running water in the area, therefore be sure to bring plenty of water with you before entering the park.

Echo Cliffs

Echo Cliffs is another prime destination for rock climbing enthusiasts. Located in the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles. It is frequently visited by the advanced rock climbers, due to its moderate challenging routes.

Point Dume

The environment of this rock climbing destination speaks to the encapsulation of Malibu; sand, sun and everything great that you can find within a short distance of Los Angeles.

Point Dume highlights the bigger state shoreline, which has a similar name and presents a test as a precipice directly on the shoreline. It may get crowded, especially during the weekend, so it is recommended to go there during the non-peek traffic hours or during the week. There are only a handful of climbing routes in this area, but the breathtaking beach side make for an unforgettable experience.

Vasquez Rocks

Located in the eastern part of Los Angeles, California, Vasquez resembles something similar to the rocky surface of Mars. In fact, this place has been the setting for numerous Hollywood sci-fi movies like Tremors, Bill and Ted and Star Trek. There are various marked climbing routes in the area however the area is only restricted to top-roping.

Malibu Creek State Park

This rock climbing adventure haven offers a lot of climbing spots for beginners (teens and kids) as well as experts. The most renowned areas for climbing would be the Mash Boulder, Ghetto Wall and Planet of the Apes. Planet of the apes wall has been used for the filming of many popular movies.

The next time you plan an outdoor trip, try to visit some of these great locations, which can offer a great rock climbing experience. Aside from getting the adrenalin rush, it will also give you a chance to socialize with other outdoor rock climbing enthusiast – who may be having a fun day in the area.

Transitioning from climbing indoors to outdoors can often be difficult. There’s not enough information given to a new climber when starting off. Some go to an indoor gym to try climbing for the first time while others take outdoor courses or get out there with the friend who has gear and some experience. Truth is there’s not a set rule on whether you should start indoors or outdoors, but it is important to understand there are big differences between the two.

Some differences between indoor and outdoor climbing

Indoors

Outdoors

gyms have colorful holds and difficulty level which make picking and finding your route very simple

there are no colorful holds to follow and in most cases you can find route information in a guidebook

gyms have rental equipment (harness, shoes, chalk-bags, belay devices) and climbing ropes

you need to have all your equipment

gyms have convenient shade and routes are accessible within a few feet

you may or may not find shade and wall approach may vary from 1 minute to 2.5 hours+

lead walls have fixed quick-draws that are normally 5 to 10 feet apart

you need to have your own set of quickdraws and bolt distance can range from 5 to 20+ feet apart

Pros about indoor climbing

convenience, short approach, can be done at night, good for training routines, weather is never an issue

Cons about indoor climbing

is not real rock, you get used to following color patterns

Pros about outdoor climbing

convenient, short approach in many cases, your are outdoors on real rock, good for training

Cons about outdoor climbing

long approach in some cases, can take more time to prepare and set up, can be difficult to do at night, depend on good weather conditions

Some common misconceptions about indoor and outdoor climbing

Indoors

Outdoors

climbing is easier, less frightening and is better for beginners

climbing is harder, more frightening is harder for beginners

is where every climbing should start

is where all experienced climbers should go

is more affordable

is more costly

So let’s talk about these common misconceptions in more detail…

Some may consider climbing indoors easier and less frightening because you’re dealing with plastic holds and fake walls, but someone can easily get hurt in an indoor gym just as they would outdoors. Climbing outdoors can be more challenging for some because you’re dealing with real rock, which can make a person automatically assume they are going to get hurt if they make a mistake. When you’re climbing indoors usually the routes are set to a specific level and in most cases is consistent throughout the entire route. When outdoors, the level of difficulty on a route is determined by the hardest move. So let’s say we have a 5.10 route with 1 difficult problem (which is often called the crux). Whatever the level of that hardest problem, is what the route will be rated. The rest of the route is easier than the 1 problem. An outdoor route can have a sequence of 5.6 moves, but if it has 1 hard problem that is rated 5.9, then that is what the entire route is rated. The highest level of 1 problem will determine the rating on the route.

There’s no rule or regulation that stipulates whether a beginner should start climbing indoors or outdoors, that should be based on convenience. Either can be a great start for anyone. Both places offer a variety of options for beginners, such as; instruction, information on gear and equipment.

Climbing indoors is not necessarily more or less expensive than climbing outdoors

Let’s take for example:

a person pays $50 month for a gym membership, multiply that by 12 month and the total cost is $600 for one year. That is assuming the this particular gym is going to teach you all the fundamentals you need to learn to do indoor rope climbing for free.

a person pays $200 for a beginner class to learn rope climbing, another $200-$300 buying gear (rope, shoes, harness, belay device), and still have a spear $100-$200 they can use to take an anchor building course and not have to depend on someone else to set up top ropes for them outdoors. The skills you learn will stay with you for many years and so will the gear, before you need to replace it.

The amount of money that you’re going to spend really depends on how much climbing you want to do

If you’re just going to climb once every blue moon, because you may have other commitments or your job may not allow enough time, then indoor climbing or buying an outdoor guided trip would be the most cost effective and convenient way to go.

If you decide to pick up climbing as a hobby, and want to or can commit more of your time to the sport, then it would be more cost effective to get the proper training courses and the proper gear.

I hope some of this information was helpful. Regardless of what you chose, climbing is an awesome and fun way to stay in tip top shape. If you haven’t tried it before, I highly recommend you give it a shot and let a professional take you out for an adventure.

So now answer this…

Are you a Gym Rat or a Desert Rat?
