There are many reasons why visitors from all over the world come to Joshua Tree National Park each year, and rock climbing is one of the biggest ones.

Taeko, an avid climber, came to experience the breathtaking scenery of Joshua Tree’s desert landscape. She has been climbing for some time and in the last few months has managed to take rope and lead courses. Her desire to learn is evident and refreshing.

When we come across individuals like Taeko, we get inspired and are reminded of the ginormous difference a few classes can make for someone who so recently became interested in the sport of rock climbing.

She climbed Swing Low 5.8, R.A.F 5.9, and Battle of Britain 5.10b in Echo Cove. For someone so new, this are incredible accomplishments.

Then went over to Thin Wall and climbed Butterfingers Make Me Horny 5.8, Count on Your Fingers 5.9, and Child’s Play 5.10d.

Taeko is a great addition to the climbing community. She is strong, determined and has the right attitude.

While walking thru the park and between climbs, she would pause to look around and couldn’t help herself from saying, “wow, I could be here everyday…”.

If you haven’t paid a visit, we recommend you take a day trip. You won’t be disappointed.

Lost Horse Wall is exposed to the sun all day during the winter months and it houses some of the longest routes in the park. Joshua Tree can get very cold during the winter months. Cold weather forces climbers to look for formations like this, so they can enjoy rock climbing and still be able to feel their fingers. There are three great classic climbs on this formation. If you haven’t climbed them yet, we recommend you check them off your tick list.

Lost Horse Wall in Lost Horse Road Area

The Swift 5.7 350 ft. multi-pitch trad route. It can be done in three pitches, from which the last two are about 150 ft. long. The climbing is fairly easy and there is great protection all the way up. First Ascent was made by Bob Dominick and John Wolfe in 1976.

Bird on a Wire 5.10a 330 ft. multi-pitch trad route. Can also be done in three pitches with the second pitch being the best. First Ascent was made by Dave Evans, Kevin Powell and Dan Ahlborn in 1977.

Dappled Mare 5.8 350 ft. multi-pitch trad route with a set of bolted anchors at the end of pitch two. The second pitch starts off with a traverse that goes left and down a horizontal crack, making the last pitch more interesting and challenging than the rest. First Ascent was made by John Long, Richard Harrison, and Rick Accomazzo in 1973.

Do plan ahead and arrive early. These three great routes usually see a lot of traffic and often have parties in line waiting to go up. Once you reach the top, walk right. The walk-off is quite long, it requires some scrambling and steep downclimbing. Bring plenty of water and trail your approach shoes to the summit, your feet will thank you.

Climbers from all over the world come to Joshua Tree National Park to experience world class climbing and often wait in line for this awesome route to become available.

White Lighning offers a variety of moves from stemming, to friction, crack climbing, face climbing, you name it this route has it.

If you are giving it a shot, make sure to bring a 70m rope to rappel from the top. A 60m rope won’t make it to the ground.

Rock climbing is a popular pastime which involves moving up a cliff face using your hands and feet, often with a rope and other equipment for protection. You wear a helmet, harness and special climbing shoes with sticky rubber.

Contrary to popular belief, rock climbing isn’t all about upper body strength and brute force. It’s more about balance, coordination and technique. But don’t worry if you believe you have none of these, because is loads of fun no matter what your background. We currently offer introductory climbing tours, with climbing secured by top rope. Participants climb up, down or across natural rock formations. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a usually pre-defined route without falling. It can be a fun recreational activity when proper climbing techniques are used.

Professional climbing competitions have the objectives of either completing the route in the quickest possible time or attaining the farthest point on an increasingly difficult route. Scrambling, another activity involving the scaling of hills and similar formations, is similar to rock climbing. However, is generally differentiated by its sustained use of hands to support the climber’s weight as well as to provide balance.

Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport, one that often tests a person’s strength, endurance, agility and balance along with mental control. Because of the wide range and variety of rock formations around the world, rock climbing has been separated into several different styles and sub-disciplines.
