Photo: Kelvin and the gang taking a break, just before entering the “birth canal” section of the Chasm of Doom. One of the many thrilling sections of the tunnel filled with obstacles and adventure.

Hidden within the rugged expanse of Joshua Tree National Park lies a mysterious and elusive wonder—the Chasm of Doom secret tunnel. This enigmatic passage, known only to a few adventurous souls, beckons those seeking the thrill of exploration and the allure of the unknown.

Located in the southwestern reaches of the park, the Chasm of Doom is a natural geological formation that has captured the imaginations of intrepid hikers and spelunkers. Its entrance, concealed amidst the towering rock formations and twisted Joshua trees, is an inconspicuous opening that belies the wonders that lie beneath the surface.

The tunnel winds its way through the heart of the earth, revealing a subterranean realm of intricate rock formations, echoing chambers, and otherworldly beauty. The journey through the Chasm of Doom is not for the faint of heart—it demands a sense of adventure, a spirit of exploration, and a willingness to navigate the twists and turns of this hidden underworld.

Legends surround the Chasm, adding an extra layer of mystique to its allure. Some say it was used by Native American tribes for sacred ceremonies, while others believe it served as a refuge for early settlers seeking shelter from the harsh desert elements. The truth remains shrouded in the sands of time, adding to the allure of this secret tunnel.

Access to the Chasm of Doom is not officially sanctioned, and when embarking on the journey be aware of the risks. The rugged terrain and challenging conditions demand a level of preparedness and respect for the delicate ecosystem of Joshua Tree National Park. As with any adventure into the unknown, safety should be a top priority.

The Chasm of Doom is located in the Hidden Valley Picnic Area. The secret entrance is located around the starting point of the Nature Trail Loop and the exit takes you back to the parking lot. Yes, you will need a guide or someone with experience to show you the way. Leave sunglasses and loose items, including water bottles and backpacks, in your vehicle. If you plan on taking a phone or keys, make sure that you store them in a zipper pocket as there are sections of the tunnel where items may fall through and no access to recover them.

On a good day, it can take two or three people anywhere between 25 to 30 minutes.

In conclusion, the Chasm of Doom secret tunnel in Joshua Tree National Park stands as a testament to the untamed beauty and mystery that the natural world can harbor. For those daring enough to seek it out, this hidden gem promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of the desert’s secrets—a journey that transcends time and taps into the primal human desire for discovery.

Parag is an avid outdoor enthusiast. He took his son, Aaditya, for an outdoor rock climbing lesson with Rock Climb Every Day. Through the sport of rock climbing, they had a great bonding experience while learning how to climb rocks outdoors with professional instruction.

Throughout the day and during their first climbing experience, they learned proper equipment use, did some top rope climbing, scrambling, repelling, belaying, and learned some important safety skills required to climb with ropes.

One of the most challenging parts of the day for both of them was figuring out climbing technique and overcoming fear of heights, which is very natural for most people trying rock climbing for the first time. With a little instruction and patience, they managed to complete many routes successfully and took on every challenge that came their way.

Starting from a 40 foot wall, then moving onto a 55 foot wall and ending the day climbing a 100 foot wall – these two guys went home with a great feeling of accomplishment and lots of sore muscles.

Great job guys!

Buddy climbing Mr. Misty Kiss on Dairy Queen Wall Right Side at Joshua Tree National Park, California. Jim is at the top, working the top belay.

This is pretty cool close up of the route. It looks like there is a good combination of crack climbing and knobs to stand on while placing gear.

Mr. Misty Kiss follows a straight line, which makes this a great route to practice placing pro. Route is about 60 feet, rated 5.7, it can be done with a single rack and its first ascent was by Dan Ahlborn and Tim Powell in 1976.

Olga leading Touch and Go, a fun classic trad climb located inside Joshua Tree National Park in California; world-class climbing destination often referred to as “climber’s playground”.

We asked her to give us some feedback on the route and she said, “The route is fun. Is definitely one of the hardest 5.9’s I have ever climbed. There is too much chalk in places that don’t serve well as holds, so a leader needs to focus on making the moves that feel natural, rather than following chalk marks.”

We asked about beta and she said, “There is a combination of hand jams, stemming, drop knees, laybacks, face climbing and high steps – the combination of everything makes this climb a truly fun classic. I didn’t use the crack on the right side very much, if at all but to stem. Route protects very well, making it safer than most leads in Joshua Tree . . .”

Touch and Go Route Info
