When and where to get it. That is one of the first questions we get from our students when they take their first class.

Some benefits to purchasing your own equipment

You will use it, you know where it has been, you know how and where it is stored, you know how old it is, you can inspect it’s condition, you won’t have to drive to a store to rent it, you won’t have to wait for a store/friend to be available to decide and join someone climbing, etc.

Climbing equipment is not cheap

It never has been, it never will be. There are always great sales out there that we can all benefit from. If you are truly interested in the sport and becoming an avid climber, remember this – any money spent on renting equipment is money you will spend in addition to purchasing your own equipment. So renting is fine, if you are shopping around and looking for the best deals, but getting your own equipment will eventually be more cost effective.

What should an aspiring climber get first?

Experience! Take some classes with professional certified climbing instructors. Then go shopping for a harness, belay device, belay carabiner, climbing shoes and a helmet. These are just some of the essentials you will need to get climbing outdoors with friends who already have rope and anchoring set-up experience. Gear can be found in packages, but if not – buying them separately, is not that much more. What should you get next? More classes, experience, your own rope and anchoring equipment.

Where to shop? RCED Climbing Gear Shop

This gym mostly consists of bouldering areas, but it offers great variety of top rope routes as well. They have 7 auto-belay machines that make it easy for those who do not have a partner or those who want to get their training done in half the time. Each auto-belay machine offers a variety of routes that range in all levels from beginner to advance. If you still don’t know your knots or how to belay, not a problem – they don’t require for you to know this, which makes rock climbing for beginners a lot easier.

Here are some useful resources:

Alpine Climbing (NCCS)

Grade I:

Normally requires several hours; can be of any difficulty.

Grade IV:

Requires a full day for the technical portion; the hardest pitch is usually no less than 5.7 (in the Yosemite Decimal System rating)

Grade V:

Requires a day and a half; the hardest pitch is usually 5.8 or harder

Grade VI:

A multiday excursion with difficult free climbing and/or aid climbing

Free Climbing (YDS)

Class 1: Hiking

Class 2: Simple scrambling, with the possible occasional use of the hands

Class 3: Scrambling; a rope might be carried

Class 4: Simple climbing, often with exposure. A rope is often used. A fall on Class 4 rock could be fatal. Typically, natural protection can be easily found

Class 5: Where rock climbing begins in earnest. Climbing involves the use of a rope, belaying, and protection (natural or artificial) to protect the leader from a long fall. Fifth class is further defined by a decimal and letter system – in increasing and difficulty. The ratings from 5.10-5.15 are subdivided in a, b, c and d levels to more precisely define the difficulty (for example: 5.10a or 5.11d)

5.0-5.7: Easy for experienced climbers; where most novices begin.

5.8-5.9: Where most weekend climbers become comfortable; employs the specific skills of rock climbing, such as jamming, liebacks, and mantels.

5.10: A dedicated weekend climber might attain this level.

5.11-5.15: The realm of true experts; demands much training and natural ability and, often, repeated working of a route.
