Prior to the class, my experience with anchor building included reading John Long's Anchor book and watching other people set up top rope anchors. After the class with Kelvin, I feel confident to set up my own anchors, and will be using what I learned this weekend and next at Red Rock and Riverside Quarry. After the class, I was still able to contact Kelvin and ask him questions, and he quickly responded. Kelvin was right on time and answered all my questions. The class turned out to be a one-on-one instruction, since no one else signed up, which was fantastic! FYI: If you sign up for their newsletter, you get $10 off your first order. I didn't know about this and so I paid full price--but I still think it was well worth it. Also, once you take their class, you are included in their "members only" outings. Her experience, enthusiasm, and coaching really became invaluable when I had to ascend the rope. She spent a lot of time talking me through the movements of ascending, which requires some practice, but she was very patient as I figured it out. Without her help, I don’t know how I would have ascended one hundred feet to the top of the rock! After rappelling and climbing, we hiked a short trail through a rock obstacle course and looked at some other areas in the park where climbers were engaged. I thought my class might be cancelled as I turned out to be the only one signed up, but instead of dreading a one-on-one or cancelling, RCED gave me all the attention that leads to developing a true understanding of rock climbing and safety tips. Because we had some extra time, Kelvin walked me through everything from safety tips, to gear, to learning to tie various key knots and how to belay, of course. Even when the fear of getting stuck took hold, he was clear and supportive and led me through an amazing experience. The website was very easy to use together with filling in the online waivers. We were scheduled to meet at the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor's center parking lot at 8 am. Olga texted us at 7:35 am to let us know to look out for her burgundy truck. After meeting up with her, we followed her into the Joshua Tree National Park. The $20 park admission allows you to enter the park for 7 consecutive days. We went hiking there the day before so we still has the receipt stuck to our windshield. As we got there early (highly recommended), we got a good spot to go climbing. RCED supplied all the equipment from helmets, shoes, harnesses etc. Carlos helped out a bit at the beginning with shoe sizes and harnesses but then disappeared. Olga then took over and went through everything. Safety was a primary concern for her together with keeping it fun. There was a couple with another instructor from another school climbing next to us and he was really pushy and the climber asked if he could stop and take a rest. I could tell that he was really struggling. Olga graciously offered our spot to them as we were about to wrap up the first location. After climbing this rock-face, we went to another more secluded location to do more climbing and rappelling. That was really interesting. I've got to say that Olga was very energetic, capable and knew her stuff. She was also very personable with my wife and teenagers. I had not done any climbing in many years & even then it had been in an indoor rock-gym setting rather than outdoors. Though Riverside Rock Quarry was not a location where Rock Climb Everyday teaches group classes, Olga & Carlos graciously agreed to make my dream come true and to take me out & "show me the ropes" (so to speak). They were patient with my being a climbing novice, didn't mind the continued repetition necessary on the knots & other techniques that was necessary in order for me to finally grasp each said concept (which admittedly took longer than for most people I would suspect), and every bit of our journey, as well as Olga's instruction, were completed with a smile. There was also a great deal of fun & laughter as she has a great sense of humor. By the end of our climbing adventure, I truly felt as though I had been genuine friends with Olga and Carlos for years. How amazing to have a connection like that with people one had only just met. The third person of each group was a belay backup for safety. Jim provided lots of advice while we all climbed 3-4 routes. After that we could have been done considering we booked a half-day, but Jim took us to another location where we got to try out two more challenging routes. I also spent another day later in the week alone with Jim. He gave me a great overview of anchor building and trad climbing. Exactly what I was looking for. Fit in a ton of instruction for a short period of time. Gave me a good base of knowledge to get me climbing outdoors. But that is just the beginning! This wasn't just a get in and get done day trip adventure, where I was told I'm safe and then had everything done for me. Olga actually taught me basics. I had to complete my own safety knots, check my equipment, and hers, for safety precautions, then how to properly belay. She actually had me belaying her. She told me where the holds were as I was moving, and took control of my fear when I couldn't. She helped me focus and insisted I take a moment to smile and relax through my fear.

My husband and I were climbers, many, many years ago, but this would be the first time for our 7-year-old daughter. Jim was great from the start. He was patient when took the wrong route to get to the meeting spot, resulting in over an hour delay, and offered to give us our full climbing time anyway. He was great with our daughter, deferring to us about whether or not to push her when she hit a scary spot. He is very knowledgeable, trustworthy and patient. I would highly recommend him to a first timer or someone who has made many climbs. When I first spoke with Olga on the phone to make a booking, I already knew I would be taken very good care of, but it was beyond my expectation! When I got to the Intersection Rock parking lot (our meeting point), I was greeted by "two" awesome guides - Jim & Olga. Jim was my main guide of the the day who set routes for me, but Olga also gave me lots of pointers while Jim was setting routes and while I was climbing. Olga also took many pictures of me climbing, belaying, chilling etc. as well as fabulous Joshua Tree scenery, which she uploaded to Dropbox and sent me the link (This is a lot of work!). She even wrote a nice article of my full day adventure at Joshua Tree and posted in her blog. All my fellow climbers back in New York are jealous that I am now famous in Joshua Tree area -lol Jim & Olga were extremely accommodating to my requests and they were for sure not stingy about spending extra time with me. "All Day Rock Climbing Adventure" was supposed to be 7 hour long, but they ended up spending 9 hours with me. I got 12 climbs and 1 rock scrambling in and ended the day very content. It was a nice way of getting my foot in the door and seeing what it's like in comparison to indoor gyms. They were very professional, accommodating, and prompt with questions I had through email and reserved a slot for us within a day's notice 🙂 Our instructor Olga, was really kind and patient. With many years of experience and teaches classes for lead climbing and anchoring, she's quite the expert. You can tell she's very passionate when it comes to climbing and even climbs when she's not working. She was great at instructing us with basic guidelines to follow and is a stickler when it comes to safety. No complaints here because those verticals were no joke! She showed us to a few different rock faces that were just the right amount of challenge. We broke out sweating after struggling to climb the harder one. Of course, if you're not up for anything too strenuous there are easier rocks to climb. Overall, it was such a great experience for us that my friend wants to pick up rock climbing too! We felt 100% safe and I've walked away with more knowledge than I did before. My body now feels like mush so I know I've got a good workout. Will definitely request for Olga again. Btw, RCED even have weekly outings they hold at different locations once you're subscribed to their mailing list. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Yelp | Olga is the best instructor a first time climber could ask for. After climbing in the gym for a few weeks, I was itching to try outdoor climbing and i was so happy to have met Olga. I went out to climb with her in Joshua Tree and we had a full day blast! Climbing outdoor is very different from climbing indoor. It just requires more skills, knowledge, confidence, and techniques and that's why i think that it's important for everyone to take at least a class from a professional. Climbing outdoor is extremely dangerous because if you don't know how to set up anchor well or familiar with the rock, it could be the last time you ever climb. Olga is a very experienced climber but she is still always so careful about everything which I really appreciate because it helped me being more confident on the rope. I'd like to describe my climbing experience with Olga beyond just a class but it was rather an experience. She knew so much about climbing and the location that I felt like I was on a national geographic expedition or something. And the greatest thing about taking a class with Olga is that you will get to connect with other new climbers and get invited to future climbing trips with other students, which is something that no other climbing school really offers.
