It is so cool to see more and more women out on the crags these days enjoying sport lead climbing. There are so many strong women climbers today; Ashima Shiraishi, Sasha Digiulian, Lynn Hill, Daila Ojeda, and Alex Puccio – to name a few.

In the past couple of months I have also seen several women climbing groups developing, advertising videos targeting women and even women-only events.

Women climbers can be weak or strong

There are several reasons why women become avid enthusiast of the sport of rock climbing. Some do it because they love it, some do it because they find a sense of accomplishment that helps them become stronger people in their overall life.

Just because you see a woman climbing, does not mean that she started by being a strong person to begin with. Just like in any sport, people like you who choose to rock climb, can spend a lot of time training, practicing, and overcoming certain fears that come with the risk involved in the sport. Managing all these different aspects of the sport is what makes most climbers, better athletes. So you don’t have to be born strong to climb, you just have to work hard on your goals with determination and desire to be successful at it.

Why women choose to climb with other women?

Most women, are naturally born with a nurturing personality. The fact that women were created to multitask, understand, analyze, and nurture children creates a bit of an advantage when communicating and interacting with other women. But this does not necessary mean, you are better off training or climbing with just women.

We asked a few women, why would they choose or prefer to rock climb with other women and here are a few answers:

I am married and my husband does not climb, so it is better for the relationship for me to share my outdoor activities with other women.

I feel more comfortable climbing with women, because they are more supportive of each other.

I don’t have a particular preference. I don’t think there should be a separation of the two, both men and women climbers can motivate each other.

I like climbing with people I know are experienced enough to help me accomplish my goals without having to over worry about whether or not they are being safe. Gender is not a factor for me in this equation.

I think women are more patient. I feel more stress and pressure when climbing with men, vs when I climb with women.

So there you have it. There is not a clear “cookie cutter” answer for what is best. Everyone has different goals, desires and living situations that are particular to their choosing of partners.

Back in the days, women climbers were few and far between. Now a days, I am happy to see more women getting into the sport and more elite women athletes being on sports magazines showing some powerful and kick ass moves.

I recommend you choose your partner(s) wisely. When it comes to sport lead climbing, there are higher risks involved, bigger falls and additional skills required. When you plan your next climbing trip, make sure that you are not just considering gender, but putting a good amount of though into making sure that person or group is being safe. Putting safety first, will put the cherry on the top of a super fun experience.

Climb on!

Rock climbing is a thrill for many men and women who enjoy the challenge of such an intense outdoor and indoor sport activity. There are several different forms of the rock climbing sport and rock climbing equipment you would use will target each variation.

Traditional rock climbing involves two people, yourself and your partner as well as the use of rope. One climber ascends a piece of rock, placing protection such as nuts and hexes into the rock’s weaknesses such as cracks or rock spurs. The rope that this climber is carrying is attached to him or her via a sit harness that is worn. The other end of the rope is attached to a climbing partner and while one climbs up, the other partner feeds out the rope as is needed through a belay device.

Sport climbing uses the same rope technique as traditional climbing but there is a bit of a difference in the sports equipment that is used. In this case, the protection has already been placed in the form of bolts. Quick draws as they are referred to are a short sling with a carabiner on each end. Sport climbing tends to stay to shorter climbs not much longer than two pitches or rope lengths. In this types of climbing there is less danger, so there is more leeway to work on technique.

Bouldering is a method of climbing where your feet seldom reach more than a few feet of the ground. There is no rope involved or any other protection. Bouldering often refers to boulder challenges and there isn’t a high risk injury because you are just a few feet off the ground.

Solo climbing is the freest form of climbing. It is similar to bouldering but still quite different. A solo climber is committed to reach the summit as opposed to focusing on his or her particular moves. This is really dangerous because a solo climber doesn’t use rope, protection or any other gear.

Mountaineering involves the thrill to reach a mountain top.Mountaineering is a form of climbing that uses a combination of skills. You may find yourself in hot and humid conditions but very quickly find yourself in steep, cold terrain. Rock climbing skills and ice skills need to be put to use full force in these areas.

Ice climbing involves using ice tools, to climb vertical ice, such as frozen waterfalls. Ice axes, crampons are two of the main tools that ice climbers use. This can be a risky sport simply because ice undergoes daily and sometimes hourly mutations and changes.

Indoor climbing is an excellent way to learn how to initially rock climb or enjoy the sport fully without ever having to climb on steep, dangerous rock. It is safe as well as supervised and controlled. Indoor climbing walls are quite popular today and often walls are moved to the outdoors. Men and woman can climb year round indoors when the outdoor weather such as rain forces rescheduling.

Some climbers find it difficult to transition from face climbing to slab climbing. A big part of why this can be so difficult is, so far there is no indoor gym that offers this type of terrain to practice the technique before you get outdoors. So you basically have to get out there to try it, practice it, and master the skill.

Chris (aka ‪TonyTheTiger‬) working the slab, using precise technique and a mantel.

If you notice above, legs are apart, right arm is up for balance, left arm is down for mantle, butt is sticking out for weight and to allow more shoe rubber contact with the wall.

There are some routes that have a variation of face and slab climbing. When there is such variation, it is sometimes difficult to switch your technique during your climb since one requires for your hips to be close to the wall and the other for your hips to be away from the wall.
