We asked this climber a series of questions on why and how she set up this top-rope anchor:

How come you chose to set up this anchor from the top?

“It’s the end of the day and I am too tired to lead it.”

What options did you have?

“I had three options; trad lead a pretty easy 5.8 dihedral, sport lead a well protected 5.11a, or simply walk to the top. Being relatively tired at the end of the day, I chose the third option thinking it would be the easier of the the three.”

This rock formation seems to be on an overhanging edge. How did you manage to build your anchor?

“After scrambling up I realized that the top of this formation was very narrow and exposed. To get to the main bolts, I had to worm my way to the edge of the formation to avoid tripping over my own shadow; as high up as I had already gone I was not going to turn back. Once there, I got to work; my anchor consisted of a large sling doubled up, two opposed locking carabiners on a magic-x for the master point, and limiting knots for redundancy.”

Did you secure yourself somehow?

“With all the climbing rope and anchoring gear I had on me, creating a back end anchor and securing myself would be a little complicated; the thought came to mind: ‘What would MacGyver do?’ so I wrapped two giant boulders with one end of the rope, attached myself to it with a prusik knot that I attached to my harness, then started my worm trek to the edge. You can’t really see it on the photo, but it’s there. Being as high up as I was and as scared of heights as I am, laying on a narrow block of rock was a tad scary for me, but the back end anchor I was attached to gave me much confidence.”

Was this setup easier than the alternative choices?

“Not at all. Setting the rope from the top was definitely much faster, but more complex than the alternative. However, I didn’t need to gear up for a trad lead, nor did I need to hunt down a good lead-belayer.”

With this experience, would you build this anchor from the top again?

“Probably, yes. I like facing complex situations when it comes to anchor building, since set ups can vary from crag to crag. I try to go for the best course of action that will keep me safe at all times and this scenario will probably not be the last I will encounter.”

If you were using the rope itself to secure yourself, how and when did you switch it for the top-rope?

“After passing the other end of the rope through the master point and throwing enough of the rope down to make it to the ground, I did the reverse worm crawl back to a secure area, untied the two boulders and threw the other half of the rope over. I think MacGyver would have given me a high five. Haha”

Were you setting this top-rope for yourself?

“No. I was too tired at this point of the day, but wanted all others who still had energy left to enjoy it. When you look at the big picture, this anchor had 2 or 3 really fun routes making this corner one of the favorites of the day.”

There is great reward and satisfaction that comes to us when we reach our goals. So we take as an example Athena’s story. A girl who devotes a lot of her time training to accomplish her climbing goals as we explain the joy of accomplishment in climbing that takes over her in this photo (below).

After months and months of indoor training, she (aka ClimbingKoda) puts herself to the test by going outdoors (pretty much every climber’s dream). Once on real rock, she was able to get a better idea of how prepared she felt to deal with sending a route on a natural rock formation.

Indoor training provides you with many simple ways to practice technique in a very comfortable and color coordinated setting. When you are outside, there are no more color holds or marked patterns to follow, so it takes a little more work to figure out. There is no such thing as air conditioning, padded floors, or in most cases even a restroom facility where you can wash your hands or do your business.

For many, outdoor rock climbing can be intimidating. The idea of banging your knee on a plastic hold seems so far away from dangerous than actually doing so on a real rock. So we keep ourselves in a safe place, until we feel ready to step outside.

After several outdoor trips, Athena finds herself in a place of peace with the great outdoors. Overcomes her initial fear of natural rock formations, the difficulty that follows mastering the send, and moves on to outdoor climbing more frequently. Then one day, as she is sending one of those outdoor challenging climbs, someone snaps a picture that captures the joy of accomplishment in climbing that overwhelms her spirit.

What is your next goal? What will you do to accomplish it? What time frame will you give yourself to get there? Will you be working on your goal alone or with others?

One of the many great things about climbing, is that you can have as many goals as you want to set for yourself. It doesn’t mean you have to be the best climber in the world. Sending a route you have been dreaming of for ages, no matter how easy that route may be, can feel just as good.

Our weaknesses are like pebbles or stones in our path. Once we learn to recognize what those weaknesses are, we can focus on improvement. The time and energy spent to improve, is the journey. Accomplishment, big or small, will change your life forever.

Our crew here, at Rock Climb Every Day, is very friendly and welcoming to beginners. We love to climbing outdoors, but sometimes (if weather conditions are not optimal for climbing) we get together at several indoor gyms. This week we are getting together at Sender One Climbing in Santa Ana, CA and Top Out Climbing Gym in Santa Clarita, CA.

We are going to work out at Sender One today 8/20/2014! After 6pm. So come meet some of our rock climbing instructors and start becoming a part of the climbing community.

Tie-in and belay test required to get on ropes.

Bring your own rope if you are planning on leading, also requires passing a test if your first visit.

If you’ve never been to Sender One, here’s a few tips to get you started:

Fill out their **Online Waiver ** before arrival for faster check in at the front desk.

Get belay certified if you’ve climbed on ropes before. – Takes roughly 10 minutes by a Sender One instructor: Tie-in, safety checks, belay techniques, and communication call outs.

Admission is $20 for an all day adult pass. $6 gear package rental (Shoes, Harness, & Chalk Bag) available if you don’t have your own stuff.

Next week, 8/27/2014 we are working out at Top Out Climbing Gym. Also after 6pm. Another great opportunity to meet our rock climbing instructors, mingle and meet new people.

They offer two types of climbing:

Auto-Belay

An auto belay is an automated braking system that eliminates the need for human belayers (CLIP AND GO!). Our auto belay area is a less intimidating area that is perfect for kids and the beginning climber while still appealing to experienced climbers. Participants can climb without a partner and enjoy the thrill of climbing up to the ceiling on their very first visit.

Bouldering

Our bouldering area is the heart and soul of the gym and is a sight to behold. Featuring a 100 foot long steep wall, a 20 foot high top out wall, and a 15 foot high freestanding boulder, our bouldering terrain has something to offer for anyone. All of our bouldering zones feature thick custom fit foam landing areas for superior safety and protection.

At Top Out, they are passionate about rock climbing. Their climbing routes and boulder problems are set by some of the best route setters in the world and offers some of the most diverse and exciting indoor rock climbing terrain in the nation. Their walls will challenge beginners and advanced climbers mentally and physically, and will leave you going home with a wonderful workout and a smile on your face.

Many people that really enjoy the sport find it difficult to find time to rock climb. In todays economy, we are all making ends meet and giving 120% of ourselves to our jobs. Once all the working hours per week are completed, you find yourself with very little or close to no time at all to rock climb.

Now a days there are many indoor possibilities for rock climbers. So not only you have the option to train, but you also have the comfort of having lighting at night, minimal or no approach and more. Regardless of these options, some still can’t find the time to train, stay in shape and enjoy the rock climbing sport overall. So what else can you do?

There is a saying, “where there is a will, there is away . . .”. That is something that we will apply to the alternative options available.

Find time to rock climb. We all know jobs are mentally and physically demanding. Being in good shape and finding a good balance between work and play are very important for our overall health. There is also the age factor, “you aren’t getting any younger . . .”, so when you keep postponing those things you love and make you happy for later on in life, you may not be able to enjoy them the same way.

There is another term we love to use, “YOLO – you only live once . . . “. We are not, by any means, saying you should be irresponsible. We are simply stating the fact that you only live once, and there are opportunities you will have that will never come around again.

If you work too many hours, find a gym close to your job. If you have kids, bring them with you or ask a friend to watch them for you (climbing is a family oriented activity). If you don’t have a climbing partner, go the extra mile to make new friends within the climbing community or join local climbing network groups (for example check out SoCal Mountaineers). Take a rock climbing class with us, we strives at making sure no climber is left behind. Bottom line is, you have options. The tricky part is, finding the one that works for your schedule.

Making the time to do healthy activities you love is important and good for your health. Your body and mind will Thank You.

Climb on and stay safe!

Ever wonder what great outdoor activities for couples you and your significant other can plan? Well, you have come to the right place.

We love sharing the joy our outdoor adventures bring everyone, but we want to take it to the next level and share some other great outdoor activities you both may enjoy. Starting with our very own, of course! And moving on to other favorites….

Here are a few ideas:

Beginners Intro Rock Climbing Class – includes 4 hours of hands-on training in all basics and fundamental skills needed for rock climbing outdoors. Whether you are new to rock climbing or want to graduate from an indoor gym to rock climbing outdoors. All equipment is provided and you get the opportunity to practice with professional rock climbing instructors. No previous experience is required.

Half-Day Rock Climbing Adventures – 4 hours of clip-and-go fun climbing as much as you can! Adrenaline rush is often part of the experience. No previous experience is required. You and your loved one can cheer each other to success!

All-Day Rock Climbing Experience – this works just the same as a half day adventure, but it includes a picnic lunch and full 7-hour day of climbing. This is for the rugged and those with more endurance than average individuals. Usually, a half day adventure would be enough to tire you out, but if you’re already athletic and don’t tire easily a full-day will be perfect.

Batting Cages – lets face it . . . men and women love hitting things, so what better way to let it all out than to enjoy a day out at the batting cages. Make it even more exciting and find one that is not too busy, has picnic tables, has some shade, and take breaks to have some snacks/lunch.

Archery Class – cupid does it better, but you can still give it a shot! Haha

Horseback riding – is not as difficult as it used to be. Now a days, there is lots of places with more availability than ever. Horses need people’s attention too. Most are trained to follow a trail, so you don’t even need to know how to ride them. Most places also have a great little restaurant next door you can visit after your horseback ride.

Golf – you can play grown up golf or miniature golf, but you both need to prepare to stand up and walk all day (bring comfortable shoes!).

Ice skating – there is nothing more romantic then falling on the arms of your lover, or not. Just make sure is an outdoor skating rink! They usually play great music and have awesome outdoor lighting.

There are many great activities in Los Angeles available for everyone. No matter what you pick, great outdoor activities for couples bring the perfect sceneries to take photos and capture great moments, so make sure to pack your camera and don’t forget all the little add-ons that can compliment your day (snacks, picnic, etc… and a big smile).
