Belay glasses (aka Belaggles) save your neck from strain and injury if you climb or top-rope regularly. I have found them to be even more useful and convenient when on lead belay, because you are able to keep an eye on both your climber and the amount of slack you are giving them.

Rock climbers and mountaineers use Belaggles to help alleviate neck pain from belaying. They allow you to keep your head straight, but see upward. With rubber nose pads, to prevent the Belaggles from slipping off your face, and a retainer cord keeps them in place when your climber falls.

Belaggles construction’s idea comes from those reading glasses originally built for older folks to read books and watch TV while laying in bed – how genius! Now-a-day people look down to stare at their cell phones, and climbers stare above to watch their partners.

Any number of activities that force you to hold your head up or down for long period of time can be straining on your neck, eventually causing long term injuries.

Some climbers find it difficult to transition from face climbing to slab climbing. A big part of why this can be so difficult is, so far there is no indoor gym that offers this type of terrain to practice the technique before you get outdoors. So you basically have to get out there to try it, practice it, and master the skill.

Chris (aka ‪TonyTheTiger‬) working the slab, using precise technique and a mantel.

If you notice above, legs are apart, right arm is up for balance, left arm is down for mantle, butt is sticking out for weight and to allow more shoe rubber contact with the wall.

There are some routes that have a variation of face and slab climbing. When there is such variation, it is sometimes difficult to switch your technique during your climb since one requires for your hips to be close to the wall and the other for your hips to be away from the wall.

These guys take pride in letting us all know they have been belaying you all day, touching your rope, while they pick their noses. You may think, “ughhh that is so nasty!”. But have you ever thought of how much dirt and bacteria is in your rope, your gear, your bag, the rock walls you climb. Just food for thought…
